Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy as a form of therapy. As part of physiotherapy, it’s most often used to accompany other treatments, such as pain relief.
In this medicinal treatment, electric currents are created by a special electrotherapeutic device, and applied to the various parts of the patient’s body, using electrodes and different kinds of electric currents. There are several different methods:
- Low-frequency therapy (up to 1000 Hertz)
- Medium frequency therapy (2000 to 36.000 Hertz)
- High frequency therapy (over 100 Kilohertz)
The electric current applied has varying effects on tissue, depending on the type of electricity used.
