Many different types of pain of the musculoskeletal system originate in the musculature. When a muscle is overstressed or overexpanded, it can develop areas in which the core becomes ischemic, and thus, painful (trigger point). The skeletal muscles make up almost 50% of our body weight, and we have about 600 muscles. Each of these muscles can develop trigger points and cause pain in far-away areas.
This therapy form tends to be painful, as it targets the sensitive spots in the musculature that are impeding the flow of blood and oxygen. It is usually applied in combination with classic massage, as part of a physiotherapeutic treatment. Persistent trigger points can additionally be treated with dry needling or shock wave therapy.
Trigger points are an often-overlooked source of acute and chronic pain.
